Understanding Pigmentation, Uneven Skin Tone & Dullness

Pigmentation, dark spots and uneven skin tone occur when melanin – the pigment that gives our skin its colour – is produced or distributed unevenly within the skin. This can create areas that appear darker than the surrounding skin, ranging from individual spots to larger or more widespread patches of pigmentation.

There are many reasons pigmentation can develop. Sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, acne, injury and genetics can all play a role, and different types of pigmentation can behave very differently.

Dullness is slightly different. Rather than an increase in pigment, the skin may simply appear less bright or radiant, often alongside dryness, dehydration, uneven texture or a build-up of dead skin cells.

Understanding what is causing the discolouration is important, as the most appropriate treatment will depend on the type of pigmentation, your skin type and how your skin responds.
