Understanding Scarring & Uneven Skin Texture

Scars form as part of the skin’s natural healing process following injury or inflammation. As the skin repairs itself, changes in the way collagen is produced and organised can leave an area that looks or feels different from the surrounding skin.

Acne is a common cause of facial scarring and may leave shallow depressions, deeper pitted scars or areas of uneven texture long after active breakouts have settled. Scarring can also develop following surgery, injury, burns or other damage to the skin.

Not every area of uneven texture is a true scar. Enlarged pores, congestion, rough texture and post-inflammatory marks can also make the complexion appear less smooth and even.

Understanding what is causing the change in texture and the type of scarring present is important, as different concerns respond to different treatments.

What Can Scarring & Uneven Texture Look Like?

Types of scars_edited.jpg

Ice Pick Scars

Deep, narrow indentations that extend into the skin and can resemble enlarged pores or tiny punctures.

Boxcar Scars

Wider, depressed scars with more defined edges. They can vary in depth and create a pitted or uneven appearance.

Rolling Scars

Broader, shallow depressions with gently sloping edges that can give the skin a wavy or uneven appearance.

Enlarged Pores & Uneven Texture

Visible pores and irregular surface texture can make the skin appear less smooth and even, without true scarring being present.

Surgical, Injury & Other Scars

Scars can develop following surgery, cuts, burns or other injuries. Their appearance and suitability for treatment depend on the type, age and condition of the scar.

What Influences Scarring?

Causes of scarring_edited.jpg

Severity of Inflammation

Deeper or more inflammatory acne lesions are more likely to damage surrounding tissue, increasing the risk of lasting changes in skin texture and scarring.

Picking & Squeezing

Picking or squeezing spots can increase inflammation and cause additional trauma to the skin, potentially increasing the risk of marks and scarring.

Your Natural Healing Response

Everyone heals differently. Genetics, collagen production and your individual wound-healing response can influence the type and appearance of scars that develop.

Skin Tone & Pigmentation

Inflammation or injury can also trigger changes in pigmentation, particularly in skin prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This can make scarring and uneven texture appear more noticeable.

Time & Scar Maturation

Scars continue to change as they mature. Some gradually become flatter and less noticeable, while established scars may persist. Scar maturation can continue for many months.

Our Professional Treatments

We offer a range of results-driven treatments to target oiliness, congestion, breakouts and the marks acne can leave behind. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your skin and may include a combination of therapies.

Microneedling with iMed Pen_edited.jpg

Microneedling

Creates controlled microchannels within the skin to stimulate its natural repair response and support new collagen production, helping to progressively improve depressed acne scars, enlarged pores and uneven texture. Exosomes can be added to selected treatments to support skin renewal and overall skin quality.

BEST FOR
Atrophic acne scars, enlarged pores & uneven texture

PRP microneedling.jpg

Microneedling + PRP

Combines microneedling with platelet-rich plasma prepared from your own blood. PRP is applied alongside microneedling to support the skin's natural repair and renewal processes while targeting scarring and uneven texture.

BEST FOR
Acne scarring, uneven texture & skin renewal

Dermal Fillers

For selected depressed acne scars, small amounts of dermal filler can be placed beneath the scar to help lift the depression and create a smoother, more even surface. Suitability depends on the type and structure of the scar.

BEST FOR
Selected depressed & atrophic scars

Skin Peels

Professional skin peels use carefully selected acids to exfoliate the skin and encourage surface renewal. They can help smooth rough texture and improve post-acne pigmentation and mild surface irregularities, but are not intended to remodel deeper pitted scars.

Surface texture, post-acne marks & mild irregularity

Microdermabrasion.jpg

Microdermabrasion

Controlled exfoliation removes superficial dead skin cells to smooth and refine the skin's surface. It can help improve roughness and the appearance of enlarged pores but is better suited to surface texture than deeper acne scarring.

BEST FOR
Rough texture, enlarged pores & superficial irregularity

Plasma Pen Scarring.jpg

Targeted Plasma Treatments

Plasma allows us to work precisely on selected individual scars rather than treating the entire area. Controlled plasma is applied directly to suitable scars to encourage skin renewal and progressively improve their appearance.

BEST FOR
Individual scars & targeted areas of uneven texture
