Understanding Redness, Sensitivity & Rosacea

Facial redness and sensitivity can occur for many different reasons. Some people naturally have reactive or easily irritated skin, while others experience flushing, persistent redness, visible blood vessels or a skin condition such as rosacea.

Sensitive skin may feel tight, dry, hot or uncomfortable and may sting or burn, particularly when certain skincare products are applied. When the skin barrier is compromised, the skin can also become more reactive and less able to tolerate products or environmental changes.

Rosacea is a long-term inflammatory skin condition that mainly affects the face. It can cause flushing, persistent redness or colour change, visible blood vessels and, for some people, acne-like bumps and pustules. Symptoms can vary considerably from person to person and may come and go over time.

Understanding what may be contributing to your redness and how your skin behaves helps us choose a gentler, more appropriate approach. Not every facial, active ingredient or treatment is suitable for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.

What Can Redness & Sensitive Skin Look Like?

Redness, sensitivity and rosacea can appear in different ways. Some people experience occasional flushing or reactive skin, while others develop persistent redness, visible blood vessels or inflammatory bumps associated with rosacea.

Flushing & Temporary Redness

Episodes of warmth and facial redness that come and go. Flushing may be triggered by factors such as heat, exercise, stress, alcohol, spicy foods or changes in temperature.

Persistent Redness & Rosacea

Persistent facial redness or colour change is a common feature of rosacea and often affects the cheeks, nose, chin and central forehead.

Visible Blood Vessels

Small, dilated blood vessels can become visible close to the skin's surface, particularly around the nose and cheeks, creating fine red or purple lines.

Rosacea Papules & Pustules

Rosacea can cause red, inflamed bumps and pustules that may resemble acne. Unlike acne, blackheads and blocked pores are not typical features of rosacea.

What Can Trigger Redness & Rosacea?

STriggers vary from person to person. Understanding what causes your own skin to flush or become more reactive can help you manage redness and reduce unnecessary irritation.

Sun

& UV Exposure

Sun exposure is a common trigger for rosacea and can worsen flushing and persistent redness. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is an important part of protecting redness-prone skin.

Heat & Temperature Changes

Hot weather, heated rooms, hot baths and showers, and sudden changes in temperature can cause blood vessels to dilate and trigger flushing in some people.

Stress

& Exercise

Stress and activities that significantly increase body temperature can trigger flushing or a rosacea flare. This doesn't mean avoiding exercise — keeping cool and recognising your individual triggers can help.

Food

& Drink

Alcohol, hot drinks and spicy foods can trigger flushing or worsen rosacea for some people. Triggers are individual, so it can be helpful to notice patterns rather than unnecessarily avoiding foods.

Skincare & Skin Barrier

Harsh cleansing, over-exfoliation and irritating skincare can aggravate sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. A gentle routine that supports the skin barrier can help reduce irritation and improve comfort.

When Rosacea Needs

Medical Treatment

Rosacea is a medical skin condition, and professional facials and skincare do not replace medical treatment.
