10 Ways to Avoid Chapped Lips

It’s that time of year when you can’t stop re-applying that chapstick to help relieve your dry, cracked lips!

There has got to be a way to prevent this! Well, there IS!

Here is your go-to list when it comes to preventing chapped lips. Luckily you don’t have to suffer through the winter months ahead.

Preventing Chapped Lips

  1. Use a humidifier – Moisture in the air prevents your lips from drying out.

  2. Breathe through your nose – This tip sounds silly, but breathing through your mouth will dry out your lips.

  3. Drink more water – Prevent dehydration to ensure your skin stays quenched!

  4. Exfoliate – Use a {clean}, soft-bristled toothbrush to gently exfoliate dead skin cells from your lips.

  5. Don’t lick your lips! – Easier said than done, right? Saliva strips your lips from its natural oils and causes them to dry out faster.

  6. Wear a scarf – Wind and cold, dry air will cause your lips to become chapped.

  7. Ditch the matte lipstick – Matte lipstick contains alcohol which is very drying for the lips. This one’s a tough tip to follow because MATTE is so trendy right now. But dry lips ARE NOT, so – pick your battles.

  8. Avoid salty & spicy foods – You know the ‘burn’ you feel on your lips after eating these types of foods? Yeah, that’s what you’re trying to avoid. Burning = Drying

  9. Wear lip balm before going outside. Avoid lip balms containing camphor, phenol, and menthol as these ingredients cause your lips to become dry. Instead, opt for ones that contain beeswax, shea butter, or coconut oil. Also, make sure that your lip balm contains SPF so that your lips don’t get burned and chapped from the sun’s damaging UV rays.

  10. Use a daily moisturiser containing ceramides (natural lipids) – Ceramides, like those found in jojoba oil, create a barrier against the elements and help regulate your skin’s hydration. It does this by sealing in your skin’s moisture and preventing it from becoming dry and flakey. Apply a thin layer on your lips during your daily skincare routine.
