Massage Contraindications & After Care

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Unfortunately not all treatments are for everyone. Please check our contraindications list to make sure you avoid disappointment. When you have any of these conditions, please do not book a massage:

  • Fever

  • Contagious diseases, including any cold or flu, no matter how mild it may seem

  • Under the influence of drugs or alcohol-including prescription pain medication

  • Recent operations or acute injuries

  • Neuritis

  • Skin diseases


The therapist can massage but not over any areas affected by:

  • Varicose veins

  • Undiagnosed lumps or bumps

  • Pregnancy (1st Trimester and thereafter without a midwife or GP consent)

  • Bruising

  • Cuts

  • Abrasions

  • Sunburn

  • Undiagnosed pain

  • Inflammation, including arthritis


The therapist would need a medical note from your GP to massage if you have any of the below conditions:

  • Cardio-vascular conditions (thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension, heart conditions)

  • Oedema

  • High blood pressure

  • Osteoporosis

  • Cancer

  • Nervous or psychotic conditions

  • Heart problems, angina, those with pacemakers

  • Epilepsy

  • Diabetes

  • Bell’s palsy, trapped or pinched nerves

  • Gynecological infections

AFTERCARE ADVICE

The following advice should be taken following a massage:

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, as massage is a detoxifying treatment

  • Drink plenty of water to assist in the elimination of toxins from the body

  • Eat a light diet to assist the detoxification and healing process

  • Get plenty of rest. You may feel tired after treatment

  • Gentle exercise – postural exercises can help with muscle tension as well as exercises that will assist with mobility. Yoga is a suitable and gentle option.

  • Do breathing exercises to assist with taking in oxygen to your fullest capacity
